ERIC HOVERSTAD, DDS![]() Dr. Hoverstad then attended the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry where he quickly became involved with the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department. Attending morning rounds, resident lectures, and assisting surgical procedures in the operating room as a dental student developed a knowledge base and desire to pursue residency training. Using his vacation time between semesters, Dr. Hoverstad completed Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Externships at Tufts University, Boston University, Washington Hospital Center, Virginia Commonwealth University, and UNC Hospitals. Working with Dr. Raymond White and Dr. Carolyn Dicus, Dr. Hoverstad published his research, “Second Molar Periodontal Status After Third Molar Removal” which was awarded the DENTSPLY International Award. He graduated with Honors and pursued an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency at Boston University. Dr. Hoverstad’s surgical training was based out of the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine and Boston Medical Center. He also trained at the Boston VA Hospitals and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a Harvard-affiliated teaching hospital. His surgical training provided extensive experience in a broad range of Oral and Maxillofacial surgical procedures including dento-alveolar surgery (dental extractions), third molar removal, implant surgery, ambulatory anesthesia, medical management of medically compromised patients, bone, gingival, and sinus grafting, pre-prosthetic surgery (preparing the mouth for dentures), maxillofacial trauma, treatment of benign and malignant pathology, reconstruction of maxillofacial defects using local, regional, and distant flaps, treatment of TMJ disorders, and correction of dento-facial deformities (orthognathic surgery). He served as a Chief Resident during his final year of residency. Dr. Hoverstad is board certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Board certification is achieved after successfully completing a rigorous written and oral peer evaluation process and requires that surgeons present and maintain appropriate professional credentials and demonstrate the requisite training, experience, and knowledge. Dr. Hoverstad is committed to serving the community and has been active in several local dental outreach and NC Mission of Mercy (MOM) clinics. He is an adjunct faculty member in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department at the UNC School of Dentistry. Dr. Hoverstad lives in Raleigh with his wife, Sarah, and their four children.
